Animated Diagram Backwash Cycle
Backwashing or media cleaning is achieved by reversal of the water flow through the filter to waste and is activated by re-positioning the multi-port valve. It is most important that the water used for backwashing is free from algae and debris. Waste pipe work should be kept as short as possible, (less than 6 metres is preferred), with a bore size the same as or greater than the filter inlet/outlet ports. Any restrictions or pipe work bends will reduce the efficiency of the back wash procedure.
The effect of backwashing can be monitored, either through the filter lid/valve sight glass or by incorporating a clear section of pipe work on the waste discharge line. At first the purged water will become extremely cloudy, gradually this will change and after 2-3 minutes the water will become completely clear, leaving the media free of debris, at which point the backwash procedure can be stopped and the system re-set for the normal run or rinse cycle. (The minimum recommended backwash rate is 35m3/m2/hr)
The frequency of backwashing is determined by the amount of pollution contaminating the water. Typically for normal outdoor residential pools this is once every 7-14 days during the swimming season. For commercial pools the frequency may be as often as 2-3 days. In some cases (such as commercial spas) backwashing maybe required daily.
